Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi
Celebrate Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi with NOHO HOME's word of the day. In Pepeluali (February) learn Hawaiian words for decor and products. Follow along on Instagram and in store.
Day 1
Noho
Seat, chair, to live, reside, to dwell
Example: Noho Mālie, To keep still or calm
“Noho in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi means, amongst other things, to dwell, to reside, to be from, to live within, to sit - perhaps with a feeling, and really that’s the spirit behind NOHO HOME and that’s what we envisioned bringing to not only our community but a global audience to be able to share from a Native Hawaiian’s love for our islands.” - Jalene Kanani
Day 6
ʻUpena
Fish net
Inspired by memories of casting fishnet in Honaunau bay, the ʻUpena Huli print represents the shoreline activities that bring ʻOhana and community members together. The fishnet pattern further speaks to the interwoven aspect of ʻike (knowledge) from our ancestors connecting us to their valuable teachings.
Day 7
‘Ōlali
To glide smoothly along, as a ship on the sea or as a fish slipping through one's hand
‘Olali is the one of the names of the motifs in the Leihoku collection in collaboration with Hawaiian Airlines– it is inspired by animals with dorsal fins that glide through the sea.
Day 8
Hale Kūʻai
Store
Shop in-person at the NOHO HOME storefront on the third level of Ala Moana Center - next to T-mobile.
Day 9
ʻAkahi
First or one
Jalene has spoken about this pattern being inspired by a visit to the Museum of Natural History and seeing similarities in the indigenous art of Turtle Island and Hawaiians. The name ‘Akahi is a nod to first peoples and first nations.

Day 16
Kapa Moe
Blanket, quilt, bedspread
Traditionally made from wauke (paper mulberry) bark, kapa moe provided warmth and comfort while reflecting the artistry and skill of Hawaiian craftsmanship. Today, our cozy throws and bedding continue this tradition, bringing modern luxury with cultural depth to your home.

Day 17
Pale Uluna
Pillow, cushion
Day 19
Pīʻāpā
Alphabet
Pronounced pee-ahhpahh. In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the printing press, we present the Pīʻāpā Throw. The floral motif speaks to traditional Hawaiian Quilting and is a nod to the art of quilting introduced by the missionaries in the 19th century. A stylized design of the pīʻāpā (Hawaiian alphabet) can be seen repeated through the background.
Day 23
ʻIke
To see, know, experience, knowledge
All of Jalene’s designs come from her experience growing and living as a Native Hawaiian in Hawaiʻi - which is often influenced by ʻike kūpuna (ancestral knowledge). That is one of the things that makes NOHO HOME special: the sharing of ʻike through artful home decor.
Day 24
Lōkahi
Unity, agreement, harmony
Each comforter has a coordinating euro sham set that perfectly compliments its colors and stories without being too repetitive. Each piece has complimentary pieces that you may not have thought to put together, but they can surprise you how they come together in harmony.
